how to stop synching 4 Replies
Google drive started synching my entire hard drive and all attached drives and used up 15GB. I did not set it up to do that. Now how do I stop it and get rid of the files on there that shouldn't be there?

To stop unintended folder syncing and recover your space on the cloud, follow these steps.
Even if you refer to Help page that a person called “Experts” recommended, it is not helpful for you because it does not give you an answer that will solve all your problems.


Backup & Sync have 2 sync ways, which are "Google Drive" (My Drive)" and "My Computer" (or My Laptop etc.).
1) Click the icon of Backup& Sync on the taskbar.
2) Open the 3 points menu and select "Preferences"
3) Open the tab of "My Computer" or "Google Drive"
4) Remove a tick to from unintended folder syncing and close by "OK".
If you disconnect your account according to Help page, all sync settings will be cleared.


5) Go to the web page where each sync uploaded your files to (see the below URL)
6) Can delete the folders that you removed a tick already.
7) Can recover your storage after deletion completely them from trash bin on the web.


▼ Google Drive (My Drive)
If enabled this, B&S create a Google Drive folder on your computer, then copy the contents of My Drive of the cloud to there. You can specify the location of Google Drive folder to anywhere on your PC.　After that, B&S continue to keep the sync between Google Drive folder on your computer and My Drive located https://drive.google.com/drive/my-drive.

You can specify any folder located anywhere on your computer to sync with the cloud.
B&S create a My Computer folder in https://drive.google.com/drive/computers, then copy the specified folder to there.
After that, B&S continue to keep the sync between the cloud and local.

Reply on thread: https://support.google.com/drive/thread/19391266?hl=en. I am trying to STOP ONLY my old computer syncing to Google Drive, Google Photos, G Docs (also M'soft OneDrive, dropbox) etc so that I can then delete/wipe my old computer WITHOUT deleting anything from the various clouds - to re-activate them on my NEW computer. So that I can wipe and sell on my OLD (only 2 yrs old) computer. I have spent days trying, unsuccessfully, to find out how to do this. Most advice centres around either (a) do it via the "Google Drive or little cloud Icon". But that has disappeared and just will not re-appear in the task bar nor anywhere else; or (b) go to "Google Chrome" > Menu > three vertical buttons > Settings. But I cannot find any such Settings. The only sets of 3 vertical buttons only offer Help and one other option which is not relevant. Asking Help for Settings gets me nowhere (except how to reset my Personal Settings). Similarly asking Help for "Advanced Sync Settings" draws a blank - I cannot find them, even though advisors say that is where I should be able to "uncheck boxes I don't want to sync". .Or close/ disconnect from the account. Even if I could find that option how do I know it would only disconnect this one PC. I would be afraid of disconnecting the synced items and losing them from the cloud. which I do NOT want to do. Believe you me I have tried dozens of ways of asking the question and read dozens of web "answers". none have helped so far. e.g https://appuals.com/how-to-stop-google-chrome-from-syncing/ looked helpful, but in the end was not. Can someone PLEASE help.

When your goal is to sell your old computer, it is a simpler way for you just to uninstall all sync application (include Chrome) same as deleting your private local data.
Those who need to be out of sync are those who want temporarily to stop downloading cloud data on their computers or who want to sync a part of data, and you don't fit into the same situation as them.
After you uninstall a Backup & Sync from your computer, your cloud data can remain on your account.


You should wipe out information on your computer which are not only your private data but the application having a login feature that installed after you buy the computer if you want to sell your old computer. Of course, should log out Microsoft account too.
